Zaragoza de Goya

Check Calendar

Zaragoza is Goya's city. He lived here from the time he was one month old until he was almost 29 years old.

It is the city where he spent his entire childhood and youth, where he was formed as a person, as an artist, and which he always carried in his heart.

We begin the route at the Basilica del Pilar to get to know its frescoes in the vault of the Coreto (Adoration of the name of God) and in the dome with the theme of the Regina Martyrum.

On leaving, we will approach the Goya Monument in the Plaza and pay special attention to the artist's curious cenotaph.

The visit is completed with the works on display in the Patio de la Infanta, in the exhibition Goya. Interlude. In this space we will be able to see more than 30 works by the painter that are part of the Goya Ibercaja - Camón Aznar Museum, and which are exhibited in this place while the expansion work on the building is carried out, which is scheduled to end in 2026.

San Fernando Church

This is an outstanding example of neo-classical architecture in Aragón. It was built to serve as the parish church for workers on the Imperial Canal following the initiative of Ramon Pignatelli. The altars were decorated by three canvases by Goya, that date from around 1800, but these disappeared during the War of Independence when the church served as a barracks for French troops

San Gil Abad Church

As with many other churches in the city, the church of San Gil Abad stands on the demolished remains of a Romanesque church from the 14th century. Despite being in the centre of the city and surrounded by houses, it follows the model of fortress churches. Its external solidity, as well as the existence of a tribune on the upper part that surrounds the whole church and from which it allows the enemy to be watched, testify to this.
