Discover the Mudejar Charm of Zaragoza: San Pablo, La Seo and La Aljafería

Immerse yourself in the fascinating Mudejar architecture of Aragon, inscribed on the World Heritage list in 1986, a unique style that fuses Islamic and Christian traditions.

Zaragoza is home to three architectural treasures that tell the story of coexistence and cultural mixing of the region: San Pablo, La Seo and La Aljafería.

La Seo: the Cathedral of a Thousand Faces

The Cathedral of the Savior, affectionately known as La Seo, is a place with a long history that dates back to Roman times, when the Forum of Caesaraugusta was located on the same site. Later, this was also the location of the Mayor Mosque of Saraqusta, whose minaret still partially remains in the current tower.

Inside, visitors can explore Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque chapels, and admire the main altarpiece, a masterpiece of European Gothic art.

One of the most emblematic and fascinating elements of the cathedral is the wall of the Parroquieta de San Miguel, located outside the chapel of the same name.

Built in the 14th century, it is adorned with a complex and delicate brick and ceramic ornamentation, which creates an intricate play of geometric shapes and plant motifs.

Patterns of stars and intertwined bows unfold in a visual tapestry that reflects the mastery of Mudejar artisans. The glazed ceramic borders in green and white tones provide a touch of color and luminosity, enhancing the beauty of the whole.

This wall is not only a work of art, but also a symbol of cultural dialogue between the Christian and Islamic communities of the time. The combination of decorative elements from both traditions creates a visual harmony that speaks of a peaceful and fruitful coexistence.

The Mudejar Magic of La Aljafería

The Aljafería Palace, one of the most important Islamic fortresses in Spain, will transport you to a time of stories and legends.

This majestic building, with its mix of Islamic and Christian architecture, is a symbol of the power and sophistication of the taifa of Zaragoza in the 11th century.

A significant part of its charm lies in the reforms carried out during the Mudejar period, especially after the Christian reconquest in the 12th century.

The Mudejar palace, built within the walls of the Aljafería, is a masterpiece that reflects the expertise of Mudejar artisans and their ability to create beauty through the fusion of styles.

The Throne Room, where the royal audiences were held, is adorned with a magnificent coffered ceiling that combines gilded and polychrome wood, creating an effect of great visual richness. The ornamental details of this room, as well as the frescoes and plasterwork, show both Islamic and Christian influence, and reflect the cultural coexistence that characterized this era.

San Pablo: A Treasure of Brick and Tile

The church of San Pablo, known as "The third cathedral of Zaragoza", is a living testimony of Mudejar splendor.

Built in the 13th century and expanded from the 14th to the 18th, the artistic styles of such periods (from Gothic to Baroque) are present, also including later works.

The impressive Damián Forment Altarpiece that adorns its interior or its slender octagonal tower, decorated with intricate geometric brick and glazed ceramic motifs, are a delight to the eyes.

It is a very significant monument of the Mudejar Architecture of Aragon, and for this reason in 2001 UNESCO declared the complex that makes up the Tower and Church of San Pablo a World Heritage Site.
