Monumento al Justiciazgo

The monument is the result of the collaboration between the architect, Felix Navarro, and the sculptor, Francisco Vidal. The topic has clear precedents in the painting of history of artists such as Unceta, Lopez del Plano or Barbasan; there are also literary references in the play by Marcos Zapata, La capilla de Lanuza (The Chapel of Lanuza), where one of the texts on the pedestal has been taken from. The column symbolises the fortress of a lost Aragonese institution, which is restored in the 19th century and is not recovered until 1987. The statue, which appears on the pedestal, represents the Magistrate, Juan V de Lanuza, whose execution was ordered by Felipe II. The memorial was paid by the Provincial Council, the City council and by subscription of individuals. On 20 December each year the Aragonese political institutions offer commemorative wreaths, in memory of the execution of the last Magistrate in 1591.
