This site has Mudéjar origins and dates from the 14th century. It was located on the left bank of the river Ebro until 1813, when it was demolished as the French army blew up the last arch of the Puente de Piedra (the Stone Bridge). The present day building was designed by the architect José de Yarza in 1858, and erected at the end of the 19th century adjoining the Franciscan Convent of Altabás. It adheres to the neo-classical tradition and has a simple, brick façade with two sections that are flanked by towers and finished off by a triangular pediment
