Bridge Pavilion
This impressive and innovative horizontal building, one of the most emblematic of the 2008 International Water Exhibition, fulfilled three functions, it was one of the main entrances to the Expo site, it serves as a pedestrian viaduct to go from one bank of the river to the other and it was a pavilion that housed the exhibition "Water, a unique resource" located in the second plant.
Work by the Anglo-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, recognized with various awards, including the Pritzker, being the first woman to receive it.
The structure simulates a gladiolus stretched out over the river, with one end, the narrowest, resting on the right bank, and the other end that branches into three stems, resting on the left bank. The bridge reaches a total length of 270 m.
One of the main peculiarities of the bridge is that it only has two secondary supports on the banks and one main one on a natural island located in the riverbed. Due to the instability of the fluvial soils in Zaragoza, they were forced to lower the foundations to 70 meters, being the greatest depth reached in Spain for the foundation of works.
Also highlight the innovative construction method used, since it involved building the structure on dry land, and once completed, moving it to its final location on the Ebro.
A rhomboid metal mesh, in which more than 29,000 rectangular pieces of glass have been inserted, in ten different shades of grey, simulating the scales of a shark.
After a period of inactivity, the Government of Aragon and the Fundación de Ibercaja, which owns the building, have carried out refurbishment works to house Mobility City, a cutting-edge museum with the most advanced technological innovations in the field of electric automobiles.
