Monumento al Rey Alfonso I El Batallador

The idea of erecting a monument to this king arose on the occasion of the eighth centenary of the reconquest of Zaragoza (1118). This memorial is erected in the Buenavista Hillock of the Primo de Rivera Park. On the base there is a bronze lion, the symbol of the city; the upper part, treated like a mediaeval tower, acts as a pedestal for the impressive statue of king Alfonso I el Batallador (6.5m.), modelled by Jose Bueno and worked in marble from Carrara. The sculptor used the portrait of the king painted by Francisco Pradilla as a model, which today is kept in the City Hall.
