The Zuda Tower
The Torreón de la Zuda is the homage tower of the old palace of the Zuda, Azuda or Sudda, a Muslim fortress located within Saraqusta and seat of the Muslim governors.
After the Christian takeover of the city in 1118 by the troops of Alfonso I the Battler, the building became the royal palace and seat of the Kings of Aragon until the 13th century, when the Aljafería Palace began to be used.
It also corresponds to a royal prison: Jaime I the Conqueror and his wife Leonor were imprisoned in La Zuda during 1224, after the uprising of the Aragonese nobility.
And it was a hospital, known as "Zuda del Hospital", in which the knights of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem welcomed the poor and sick.
Its current appearance is the result of a rebuilding in the 16th century and during the 20th century, it underwent extensive reforms.
Currently, it houses one of the municipal tourist offices and from the top floor you can find the Mirador de las 4 Culturas, a 360º view. Inside, under your feet, you can see the ashlars of the tower of the Roman wall on which it is built. Do you dare to discover it?
