Following the re-conquest of the city, a Roman temple was built in the middle of the 14th century, but subsequently destroyed in order to erect the present mudejar church in its place. Its main gateway, constructed in 1640, is a notable feature, as is the brick-built tower, which dates from 1356. The open lower floors are combined with rectangular uppers ones, with the final two featuring openings for the bells.

The interior reflects the Baroque restoration carried out between 1719 and 1725, when the temple was reoriented to create a new entrance. The apse was rebuilt, together with a new cover featuring barrel vaults with lunettes, and the whole structure was decorated with Baroque plaster carvings. The main altarpiece, commissioned in 1628 and dedicated to Saint Gil Abad, is outstanding.

The Sacristy was built between 1776 and 1779. The vault is decorated with a fresco by Ramón Bayeu and the walls feature seven canvas paintings by Fray Manuel Bayeu.
