San Carlos
The School and Church of the Inmaculada, belonging to the Company of Jesus were raised on the plot of land previously occupied by the Higher Synagogue of the Jewry of Zaragoza. In the 18th century the whole interior ornamentation of the church is renewed ,designed by brother Lacarre-, making it into the most sumptuous unit of the Zaragoza Baroque and a model for numerous later pieces of work. After the expulsion of the Jesuits (1767) it was called the royal Seminary of San Carlos Borromeo, in honour of the king Carlos III.
The whole interior of the church is worth a careful visit due to the profuse decoration, which is deployed throughout the nave and in the side chapels. Within the whole unit the enormous high altarpiece of the Inmaculada stands out, with dramatic and scenographic conception: the golden wood, the bright colours ,red, turquoise, pink-, and the refined ,Chinese, decorations with floral motifs, already indicate a sensitivity close to rococo.
The chapel of san Jose is the first that we find on the right after entering the temple, separated from this with a bronze gate. Its lavish decoration and its execution prior to the rest of the ornamentation of the church, make one think that it was the model taken by brother Lacarre for the renovation project. A private chapel of the Duke of Villahermosa, presents a Churrigueresque altarpiece on the front made of golden wood and on the sides, in jasper niches, praying statues of the dukes in white marble are located. On the side walls the decoration is completed with a series of paintings by Vicente Berdusan, dated in 1693.
