One of the best kept secrets in the city is the headquarters of the Real Maestranza de Caballería, one of the best-preserved Aragonese Renaissance palaces, located in the historic center, behind La Seo.
Built by order of Don Miguel Donlope, who worked for some time as a lawyer for the city of Zaragoza, its architecture is typical of the Aragonese Renaissance. The rich plaster ornamentation of the courtyard in the interior and the staircase and the coffered ceilings of the rooms on the main floor that mix Renaissance and Mudejar elements stand out.
The Aragonese Renaissance architecture adopts the classic elements of the Italian Renaissance mixing them with Gothic and Mudejar, the famous art of the staircase gives us a good example of this.
Zaragoza in the 16th century was a rich city, nicknamed La Harta, due to its great economic development, and that wealth was reflected in the buildings of the time. There were more than 200 Renaissance palaces, the city was known as the Spanish Florence.
