Puente Tercer Milenio

Daniel Marcos

As part of the Ranillas meander conditioning works to house the International Exhibition of Agua in 2008, the Huesca engineer Juan José Arenas de Pablo was commissioned to build a bridge that, while serving as a link between the neighborhoods of La Almozara and Actur -Rey Fernando, was one of the main entrances to the Exhibition.

The result was this arch bridge supported by its deck, with a structure with a span of 216 meters, deck of 270 meters and 43 meters wide. It has six lanes for cars, two for bicycles and two for pedestrians. The walkways for pedestrians are covered by curved metal structures with glass and thus protect pedestrians from inclement weather.

The bow is very slender and wide, almost a ribbon. It is built in high resistance white concrete and reaches a height of 36 meters. From it, and by means of a framework of 64 hangers or special steel cables, the base board is supported. A bridge that is destined to become an international reference in bridge engineering due to the quality of its design, dimensions and technical innovations in materials and construction systems. It is the largest suspended concrete arch bridge in the world.

Its striking resemblance to the La Barqueta bridge in Seville, designed by the same author. But it presents some clear differences, this one is larger and compared to the steel used in the Barqueta, high-resistance white concrete is used, a material that offers a greater capacity to cushion the structure against possible vibrations produced by wind or traffic.

This bridge, worthy of its name "Puente del Tercer Milenio", is today a symbol of modern Zaragoza that has remained after the 2008 International Exhibition.
