The Fiestas del Pilar

Daniel Marcos y Félix Bernad

The Fiestas del Pilar are the great autumn festivals that close the season in style. Tradition and modernity come together to show you the best of Zaragoza. We invite you to discover it in first person.

It is said that you do not know what a good festival is if you have not been to the Pilar Festival!

Every October, for ten days, the capital of the Ebro shows its most cheerful, imaginative, colorful face and, above all, boasts its well-deserved reputation as a welcoming city.

More than half a thousand cultural and recreational events for young and old, Zaragozans and visitors, to enjoy the festival and culture. Did you know that 90% of the events are free to enter and take place on the street?

The festivities begin with the parade of clubs to attend the Proclamation in the Plaza del Pilar.

The Plazas of the Historic Center become stages that host theater, circus, dance and humor, percussion, clowns, mimes and much more. Great concerts in the Plaza del Pilar, next to a stage reserved especially to show Aragonese folklore.

Crafts take to the streets in the form of a fair in the Plaza de Los Sitios. There are also spaces reserved for the little ones to enjoy itinerant theater shows, with the children's spaces Río y Juego and the Puppet Park. The Parque Grande José Antonio Labordeta puts music and color to its fountains to give us a wonderful show every evening.

The Comparsa de Gigantes y Cabezudos brightens up the streets with their parades to the rhythm of music and makes children run with their songs. El Tragachicos runs through several places in the city, serving as a slide for the little ones. And the fairs fill the afternoons with fun with their rides, lights and raffles... Cotton candy, caramel apples, chocolate with churros and batons and baked potatoes can't be missing!

Several gastronomic samples take place in different areas of the city to give a good sample of the products of the land. La Carpa del Ternasco de Aragón, FoodTrucks, Plaza de los Sitios, Zaragoza Trade Fair, … Along with the wide and varied offer of the great gastronomy professionals in the city's restaurants and bars. Aragonese tradition and folklore are represented in these four acts:

  • Since the 18th century, at dawn on October 12, the Rosario de la Aurora gathers hundreds of faithful who walk the streets, from the Parish of San Pablo to the Basilica del Pilar.
  • October 12 is Zaragoza's big day, the Ofrenda de Flores begins first thing in the morning. Citizens from Aragon and from all corners of the world parade dressed in their regional costume, before the Virgen del Pilar, patron saint of Zaragoza and the Hispanic community, to place millions of flowers at her feet.
  • October 13 is the turn of the Fruit Offering, in which the Regional Houses offer the Virgen del Pilar the best of the fruits of their land.
  • The evening is reserved for the Crystal Rosary, the procession fills the streets with emotion and fervor with more than 200 lanterns and 15 crystal floats on a route that runs through the historic center.

The earliest risers have an obligatory appointment at the Plaza de Toros de la Misericordia, don't miss the heifers, the trimmers, the emboladores and the rejones. In addition, the Pilar bullfighting fair is the fair that closes the season before the bullfighters travel to the Americas.

The fireworks put the finishing touch to the Fiestas del Pilar. A pyrotechnic show that leaves precious snapshots of the Basilica on the Ebro river and that resets the counter to zero for next year's festivities.

Don't let them tell you, come and enjoy the Fiestas del Pilar!

They have also been declared Festivals of International Tourist Interest.
