The Convent of Santo Sepulcro
The Monastery of the Resurrection or better known as Monastery of the Holy Sepulcher, is made up of the church of San Nicolás de Bari and the temple of the Holy Sepulcher and the convent facilities. You will be surprised by the history of this Mudejar jewel.
Did you know that the Monastery of the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulcher is the only Mudejar-style convent structure that has come complete and in working order to this day? Inhabited for 700 years, it continues to be a living building and the only one of the order in Spain. This jewel is located in the historic center of the city, next to the ruins of the Roman Walls of Caesaraugusta.
The current church was built in the 17th century, in the place where there was a small Romanesque church, of which only the Crismón remains.
Under the order of the Regular Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre, at the beginning of the 14th century, the Monastery of the Resurrection was founded in Zaragoza.
During the second Sieges in 1809, the monastery was about to be blown up by the French, but after a heroic resistance in which more than half of Zaragoza's population died, the city surrendered thus avoiding destruction.
This monastery is the only one within the city that has survived the passage of time, and the order that founded it 7 centuries ago still lives inside it.
