Zaragoza, the City of Beer

Luis Lacorte

Few things in life unite people quite as much as a taste for beer. Meeting with friends for a few drinks is a universal ritual that encourages us to be more sociable and strengthens friendships.

We can’t talk about this tradition without mentioning the La Zaragozana brewery, where Ámbar beer and all its varieties have been produced for more than a century. The beer icon of the city, La Zaragozana was the first brand in Spain to market alcohol-free beer and has expanded its range with many diverse recipes. Furthermore, in 2019, La Zaragozana became the most recognised Spanish beer manufacturer at the World Beer Challenge 2019.But this is just the beginning of what there is to discover about beer in Zaragoza.

For many years, craft beer has been a growing trend, and in a relatively short time, the Aragonese capital has become a place of pilgrimage for beer lovers. The list of new brands in the city is long, and just the challenge of trying all of them will take a long time, even for the biggest beer enthusiasts. Luckily for them, there are two important events celebrated in Zaragoza where local and international masters offer up their brews.

Birragoza, a festival which first started in 2012, is one of the most awaited dates for beer lovers. At the end of summer, for a low entrance fee, this meeting of professionals and enthusiasts doesn’t just offer beer tasting, but also tasting workshops, brewing workshops, food matching workshops, and of course, some fantastic food.

A newer event, but just as interesting, is the, es el Zaragoza Beer Festival which was first celebrated in June 2019 at the aforementioned La Zaragozana brewery. With more than 10,000 m 2 of exposition space, craft beer brands from all over Spain and across the world gather to present themselves between the tastings, conferences, performances and great food. The festival is also a great opportunity to visit a genuine brewery, open since the year 1900.

But you don’t have to wait for these big festivals to enjoy some craft beer. At any time of year, on practically every corner of the city, there’s a new flavour, a new experience, a new beer waiting to be discovered.

One of these places is Cierzo Brewing, which in addition to being one of the most renowned craft breweries in Spain, also runs the first brewpub in Zaragoza . A unique space, in which to taste their beers and accompany them with a great gastronomic offer, without leaving the city center.
