Public art

Esther Casas

The city of Zaragoza, a meeting point for a great diversity of artistic currents, offers a multitude of artistic manifestations that can be admired free of charge.

One of the charms of walking around Zaragoza is seeing how in every corner, in the most unexpected corner, an artistic manifestation appears that tells us things about the culture and history of the city. These expressions that come out to meet the citizen in streets, squares and parks is what we call public art: a cultural heritage that is quite a treasure, and that all citizens and visitors to the capital can enjoy just by walking through it.

Monuments, sculptures, facades, ceramics, and historical remains are found in the open air throughout the city, and that's not to mention the large number of works of urban art that we can also find in its streets. For those who want to delve deeper and get to know all the corners that house this public art, Zaragoza Turismo offers an extensive catalogue in which they detail all the works that can be found in their neighborhoods.

In addition to the extensive and detailed catalog of monuments, sculptures, reliefs, etc. each one with its history and meaning, we can find in the document a series of suggested itineraries that not only make us walk through the most emblematic environments of Zaragoza; It also makes it easy for us to enjoy all these small and large artistic pieces along the way while learning more about the history of the city and its cultural influences.

It is very enriching, for example, to let the Ebro River mark our steps now that, since Expo 2008, it has become more than ever the "main street" of Zaragoza, from which the city grows on both banks. Walking along its banks is always a pleasure, but doing it while we are surprised by sculptures, architectural interventions and murals that come our way on our way. From the Water Park to the Barrio de las Fuentes, sculptures and installations from this century, many of them designed for the Universal Exhibition, they alternate with pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Another of the itineraries invites us to tour the Torrero Cemetery, a nineteenth-century site that houses numerous examples of sculptural and architectural exquisiteness, as well as, of course, the burial places of men and women who have forged contemporary Zaragoza: artists, politicians, popular characters from different eras who rest here today, together at the same time.

Another suggested itinerary runs through the fountains and sheets of water that dot the city. One more itinerary encourages us to get to know the commemorative monuments that remember the past adorning the city. And, of course, there is another one that takes us through the squares of the Casco Viejo, starting with the one in Pilar, where the Basilica is located and which is always a good starting point for any expensive cultural tour . And all this without forgetting that, in each of its neighbourhoods, Zaragoza has surprises in store for us that undoubtedly deserve to be discovered.
