Acuario Fluvial
The Zaragoza River Aquarium, one of the three thematic pavilions of Expo 2008, is the largest freshwater aquarium in the world and one of the largest in the world. It has a built area of 8,000 m2, of which 3,400 m2 are exhibits.
The central tank, 9 metres deep and more than 45 metres long, is the largest freshwater aquarium in Europe.
Its 70 fish tanks house more than 5,000 animals from more than 350 different species of fluvial fauna characteristic of each of the five rivers represented: Nile, Mekong, Amazon, Murray-Darling and Ebro.
The building has different bodies where the central space represents the glaciers that are the origin of all the rivers; the great freshwater tank, 9 meters deep and 45 meters. On the sides there are quadrangular tanks that house the exhibition spaces dedicated to the five rivers mentioned above.
Although most of the animal species exhibited are fish, other vertebrates are also represented such as reptiles (caimans, snakes, turtles, varans), mammals (otters, marmosets), amphibians (frogs), and invertebrates (anemones, corals, insecto-palo...).
In the different fish tanks that make up the installation are represented the multiple ecosystems that live in the environment of the five rivers represented. Among the species that can be observed are sturgeon, anaconda, piranhas, otters or crocodiles.
