Monumento a Los Sitios

In 1907 the Council of the Centenary of the Siege, presided by Basilio Paraiso, entrust this piece of work to the sculpture, Agustin Querol. The official inauguration of the monument was presided by the Alfonso XIII and his wife, Queen Victoria Eugenia, in 1908.

It is, undoubtedly the most complete and beautiful public sculpture of the city: the architecture of the pedestal and the figures merge into a unit of great visual impact full of refinement. The modernist style is obvious in the fluidity of the shapes and the use of materials and different techniques, from relief to free sculpture. The characters represented are the most unique defenders of the Siege, highlighting the group of heroines towing a canon. The monument is crowned with the allegory of Zaragoza, represented by a female figure resting on the city shield.
