Patio de la Infanta

The Patio de la Infanta permanently exhibits a collection of ten paintings by Goya, five belonging to Ibercaja and another five to the Royal Aragonese Economic Society of Friends of the Country.

Out of all the works one of the best portraits by Goya stands out, that of the Aragonese Felix de Azara y Parera. It is a full-length portrait, modelled with detail; the figure stands out over a more picturesque and free background, with broad, free brushstrokes. It is a portrait with an original conception, where the double-military and scientific- condition of the model is reflected.

In his Self-portrait the artist is presented as a young man with firm and decisive character. It is a work of realistic, simple and confident conception; the force of the work resides in the eyes of the painter, which seem to see the complicity of the onlooker.

Another work of excellent quality is the Portrait is Jose de Cistue y Boll, Baron of the Menglana; a magistrate from Huesca who actively took part in the two Sieges of Zaragoza alongside general Palafox.

The collection is completed with the following works: Carga de los mamelucos en la Puerta del Sol (Charge of the Mamelukes at the Puerta del Sol), a preparatory sketch of the famous painting; Danzantes enmascarados bajo un arco (Masked dancers under an arch); Sketches of the Aparicion de la Virgen a Santa Teresa (Aparition of the Virgin to Santa Teresa) and La Virgen impone el collar a Santa Teresa en presencia de San Jose (The Virgin imposes the necklace on St. Teresa in the presence of  St. Joseph) ; Escena no identificda (Scene not identified); Esopo y Manipo (Aesop and Manipus), a copy of the originals by Velazquez.
