Seman Europea

From 5 to 9 May Zaragoza will organize the European Week, a series of activities and events related to Europe Day (9 May) that every year commemorates the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, considered as the origin of what is actually the European Union.

The film cycle took place during the week at the Renoir cinemas. Five European films that have obtained an excellent answer among public and critics were screened, with the objective of showing the richness and cultural diversity of Europe and promoting European cinema. The films were "Happy go Lucky" (United Kingdom), "Gomorrah" (Italy), "Parlez-moi de la pluie" (France), "Cherry Blossoms" (Germany), and "Once" (Ireland). The films were screened in its original language with Spanish subtitles.

The formal act took place on 5 May at the Plenary Sessions Room of Zaragoza City Hall. The Mayor, Juan Alberto Belloch, conferred the Europe Star 2009 to Diego López Garrido for his professional career and work in spreading the values of the EU inside and outside of our frontiers.

There were also awarded the drawing and writing awards of the contest "Tus Vecinos Europeos"( "Your European Neighbours"), with the participation of around 200 schoolchildren from different Primary and Secondary schools. The winners were the following educational centres: Antonio Machado (Drawing, Secondary Education), Jerónimo Zurita (Drawing, Primary Education), Condes de Aragón (Writing, Primary Education), and Grande Covián (Writing, Secondary Education).

As a closing, the play "Al Parlamento con Fundamento" was staged at plaza de San Bruno on Friday 8 May at 18.00 hours. The play, addressed to young people, presents in a close and amusing way how the European Parliament affects our daily lives in topics such as food, energy, etc.
