Baroque Walk
Baroque Zaragoza is a contradictory city, but true to the Spain of the final years of the Habsburg reign. Politically, Zaragoza suffered the consequences of an absolutist monarch, no more so than in 1591 with the beheading of the Justice of Aragon, Juan V of Lanuza, which was ordered by Philip II. Even though all the Kings of the Habsburg dynasty continued to swear allegiance to the Aragónese Jurisdiction at San Salvador Cathedral, Aragón depended increasingly on centralized authority which culminated in the so-called -Nueva Planta- decree of 1711.
