Its origin dates back to the time of the Reconquest, linked to a miraculous intervention of the Virgin, who saved the city from a Moslem attack in 1137. The Baroque construction of the 18th century has been the object of important interventions throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Its location, together with one of the gates of the wall, causes it serious damage during the War of Independence. In 1908 the Chapel of the heroines is inaugurated on the inside, in honour of the women who bravely fought during the Siege: Agustina de Aragon, Casta Alvarez and Manuela Sancho. On 5 February, festivity of Santa Agueda, the women of Zaragoza come to this church with great fervour to venerate the relics of the martyr, that are kept on the inside.

The outside offers a solid aspect, of a compact block of brick. In contrast, the inside is extensive and diaphanous: a hall ground plan with three naves with side chapels and beautiful decorations in stucco, which show clear influences of the church of Santa Isabel de Portugal (San Cayetano) and of the Basilica of the Pilar. in its ornamentation the tradition of the Aragonese plasterwork is maintained, on this occasion with vegetable and figurative motifs. The scallops of the dome are decorated with the theme of the four strong women of the Bible and the defeated leaders at their feet: Esther, Judith, Jahel and Deborah. The high altarpiece, from the church of Santo Domingo, holds the Gothic image of Nuestra Señora del Portillo in its central niche.
