Zaragoza from the Towers

Zaragoza from the Towers

Aside from the general meaning of the word, which relates to military constructions and the structures that crown and adorn churches, in Aragon the word `Tower` also refers to a farmhouse dedicated primarily to the cultivation of trees and vegetables. It also adds an element of leisure to the equation. Thus, at the beginning of the 20th century a row of these towers lined one of the main roads into the city. Such was the importance of this route that over time it has become one of the key thoroughfares in the city, the Camino de las Torres.

However, the towers that really shape the image of Zaragoza are its religious ones, like the belltower of the Santa María Magdalena Church, which dates from the 14th century. Its elaborate pattern of ceramic tiles makes it one of the finest examples of Mudéjar art. The tower of the Iglesia de San Pablo, also of Mudéjar origin, stands out thanks to its octagonal plan, its height and the beauty of the church from which it rises out, which is considered Zaragoza`s third cathedral.

The Torre del Agua (Water Tower), meanwhile, is a child of the third millennium, having been erected for the 2008 International Exhibition. It symbolises a modern, dynamic and sustainable Zaragoza. Shaped like a droplet of water, it rises up from a vast structure. Its prominent use of glass made it the icon of the exhibition.

A range of other towers can be found in the city, like those of San Miguel de los Navarros, San Gil Abad and the extremely slender tower of the La Seo Cathedral. The most famous towers, however, are without a doubt those of the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar. The image of these four structures, combined with the colourful domes of the basilica, has become synonymous with the city and millions of people across the world could identify it. Plus, you can even go to the top of one of them, where you can enjoy the unforgettable experience of gazing out over the Plaza del Pilar and all of Zaragoza from a birds` eye view.
