This magnificent civil building built between 1541 and 1551, was being used as gallery, at least from the beginning of the 20th Century. It is important to remember that la Lonja celebrated in 1919 a Fine Arts Spanish-French Exhibition which met, among others, outstanding names such as Beruete, Domingo, Iturrino, Nonell, Picasso, Regoyos, Vázquez Díaz, Zuloaga, Mariano Benlliure, Clará, Gargallo, Julio Antonio Macho; and from 1942 to 1945 the Autumn International Photographic Show, up and running from 1925; and from 1943 to 1955 the majority of the thirteen editions of the Aragonese Artists Show). But, it will be at the beginning of the 1970s that, thanks to exhibitions such as those of Manuel Viola in 1972, and Pablo Serrano in 1975, that la Lonja begins to set its status, becoming a permanent and exclusive gallery halfway through the 1980s.
