Presentation

The Department of Education and the Libraries of Zaragoza City council are the organising bodies of the municipal library policy. The Department of Public Library, integrated in this, consists of 1 Centre Co-ordinator, 9 District Libraries and 15 Local Libraries, whose aim is to provide citizens with material and services that facilitate the access to information, training, leisure and culture.

Services

The resources of the libraries are freely available, so the user can use them directly, without having to make any kind of request via a member of staff. The personnel of the centres are on hand to facilitate the use of the collection. All the services of the library are free of charge.

Reading Room

All the books, magazines, newspapers and official publications can be read and consulted freely in the room.

Loan

This service allows the users to take out several documents (books, magazines, disks, videotapes and electronic documents) and to use them outside of the library during a certain period. Most of the bibliographical resources of the centres are available for loan.

To use this service you must be a member, which means you have to supply 2 photos and present an official document as means of identification. A member´s card is valid for all the centres of the net. The card is made available free of charge.

The user of this service is responsible for the use he makes of the borrowed material and should comply at all times with the effective dispositions regarding royalties.

The loan material should be taken care of and returned on time for the smooth running of this service and in the interests of all users, the return of documents should be carried out within the fixed terms. The material will be able to be taken out again for a similar period whenever it has not been requested or reserved by another user. In the event of non-fulfilment of such terms, the user will be able to be excluded temporarily from this service. In the event of loss or any damage to the borrowed material, the user will be obliged to replace it.

Reservations of documents can be made.

Collective loans to groups are also available. The conditions of the loan regarding type and number of items, as well as the duration will be determined in each case. A member of the group will become responsible for the use and return of the borrowed documents.

Services for children

The libraries offer children basically the same services as those for adults (Reading Room, Loans, Information, etc).

In the District Libraries, there is a room specially dedicated to children. Children under 8 years old should be accompanied by an adult.

Service of Bibliographical Information

The Co-ordinating Centre and the District Libraries offer a professional information and reference service on any topic that the users request in any centre. The supply of the required information will depend on that of the demand (in some cases it may be immediate) and will be carried out through the pertinent means (mail, fax, by hand, etc.).

Access to Internet

(In several Libraries) Terminals are available through which users can connect free of charge to Internet (navigating and e-mail, other forms of electronic communications being excluded). Similarly, works published in CD-ROM can be consulted from these terminals.

In this same room you also have the possibility of using the installed software (word processors, spread sheets, databases, etc.) Activities for the development of reading and the use of the library Periodically, development activities for reading and the use of the library are organised:

  • Library exhibitions.
  • Reading clubs.
  • Encounters with authors.
  • Activities for children:
    • Story telling.
    • Story Hour (specially dedicated to children from 6 to 8 years)
    • Tiny Tots Story Hour (specially dedicated to children from 3 to 5 years)
    • Craft workshops at certain times of the year (Carnival, Christmas, etc.)

The libraries also collaborate with entities or associations for the development of activities.

Users´ guidance and guided Visits

With the objective that the users learn techniques for searching for information and that they can take full advantage of the resources and the services that the libraries offer, guided visits and training courses to groups are organised..

Catalogues

To discover the bibliographical resources of each library and to have access to the documents, catalogues for public consultation are available.

In the libraries with computerised services an automated collective catalogue exists (OPAC) that provides information about the resources of the own library and those that have been incorporated in the other centres of the net from 1991. In the non-computerised libraries there are manual catalogues and from them it is also possible to consult the automated collective catalogue.

Library Rules

So that the service offered by the library operates in the most effective way, it is necessary that the following rules are followed:

  • 1. The library offers the user fundamentally four types of service:
    • Reading and consultation of documents in a room.
    • Loan of documents.
    • Information.
    • Access to Internet
  • 2. Access to the library is free for all citizens and the previously mentioned services are free.
  • 3. Regarding the loan of documents:
    • Documents available for loan are most of those that compose the collection of the library, except for the reference works and those that, being of a special nature, can only be consulted in a room.
    • To participate in the loan service, the user should supply 2 passport sized photographs and present an official document of identification. Children who do not possess one, should present that of a relative accompanied by a letter of authorisation.
    • The user will be given a valid card for all the centres of the Department of the Public Library of the Department of Education and Libraries of Zaragoza City council
    • Each user with a library card will be able to take out several documents during a certain period according to the type of material. The material can be taken out again for a similar period whenever it has not been requested or reserved by another user.
    • For the smooth running of the loan service and in the interest of all users, the return of documents should be carried out within the fixed terms. In the event of non-fulfilment of such terms, the person responsible for the service in the library will be able to exclude him temporarily from this service. In the event of damage to or loss of the borrowed material, the user will replace it.
  • 4. Regarding access to Internet:
    • Navigating and e-mail services are allowed, other electronic communications are excluded.
    • The users of this service should have a card from the Municipal Public Libraries of Zaragoza City council and be over 18 years old. In the case of a child, he should be accompanied by parents or tutors, or, else, present a signed letter of authorisation.
    • The user undertakes to make appropriate use the access service to Internet. Access is not allowed to informative contents that are not of a public, civic or social nature of the library and the user will be considered responsible for the visualisation of the selected documents on screen. Personnel reserve the right to interrupt any connection that shows inappropriate contents for a public place. The inappropriate use of these resources will result in the temporary suspension of the service for the user, without affecting the responsibilities in any way that may arise from these acts.
  • 5. The Library is a public place, and so the users should maintain a respectful level of behaviour. The personnel of the library will ask those people who do not observe this level of behaviour to leave the centre.
  • 6. Children under 8 years of age should be accompanied by an adult.
  • 7. Smoking, eating, drinking and using mobile telephones in a non-silent way are not allowed.
