LEARNING FOR PLEASURE. THE ARTISTIC SUBJECTS REINFORCED IN ZARAGOZA CINEMA, THEATRE, MUSIC, PAINTING, DANCE, WRITING, CIRCUS… AMONG THE PREFERENCES OF THE PEOPLE OF ZARAGOZA
Escuelas Artísticas Municipales

Educate in emotions and get moved by learning, learning for pleasure and the pleasure of learning? because "the development of artistic creativity drives us to creativity in all the fields " (Winnicott), "Labor omnia vincit improbus", "Continuous work wins everything" (Virgilio), or "I learn yet" (Goya) giving title to one of his engravings where the genius of Fuendetodos, being 80 years old and convinced of the capacity without limits of human being knowledge, reflects in the attentive look of an old person who goes out of darkness and walks with a stoop but with integrity towards the light, the most genuine of human soul: be alive is to learn. A genuine declaration of principles, the human being never stops enjoying learning and its sense of curiosity is inexhaustible.

Learning is a constant in our whole life. Travel, live new experiences, know different people, make courses, read something that apparently has nothing in common with our career or go to the cinema. As a summary, training ourselves allows us to have a better comprehension of the world and live in a more intense and full way.

The simple pleasure of training ourselves as human beings helps us create. And if we think that "creativity is to connect things" (Steve Jobs), we can conclude that the more different are those "things", the more different connections to others we will have. The capacity to mix, to experiment new emotions, to connect different fields and be able to resolve problems will help us going ahead. Education in the artistic and cultural field, widens our horizon as people, creates new opportunities, erases prejudices, and foster growth and development without limits. Learning is essentially a pleasurable process that we search because we hope to be happier.

Zaragoza has a wide offer to dive into the enjoyable world of learning in fields so different such as music, theatre, cinema, dance or even circus. From the 80s, Zaragoza has a wide experience that has put us at the head of the pioneering cities in this kind of no formal education fostered by the City of Zaragoza through its municipal schools of music, dance, theatre, the popular university, its workshops for woman promotion and many more public initiatives that have had great welcome between the citizens.

The different offers of no formal artistic education of Zaragoza are ruled by the principle of the continuous learning and supported by a series of characteristics. They are flexible, inclusive, adaptable and stimulating, opened to original and creative proposals, heterogeneous and innovative and maybe the most important, ludic and amusing.
All the activities proposed are included in a climate of tolerance and respect that favours the personal development and a good communication.

The City of Zaragoza fosters other activities similar to no formal education activities as a starting point, not only for learning but also for teaching respect and the integration of every citizen.

Municipal Artistic Schools:
music, dance and theatre have the firm goal of opening new perspectives in music education, dance and theatre, offering people a wish to approach these subjects as amateurs and the possibility to develop his/her creative capabilities and their artistic sensitivity. The goal is to focus education in ludic, emotional and creative elements, empowering more the pedagogical and social aspects than those purely didactic through a flexible plan of studies.

Urban art in Zaragoza 8th Asalto

Asalto has turned Zaragoza into a referent in the national and international panorama of urban art. Its most characteristic artistic creations are its installations, mural paintings and paintings in general, expressions that have in common their experimentation and give place to an heterogeneous artistic creation.

Among the innovations of the 8th ASALTO 2013 It can be highlighted its workshops such as the Composition Workshop in Urban Surroundings, thanks to which a route of urban art with 30 interventions has been created.

Carolina Rojo

Carolina Rojo art gallery

The art gallery Carolina Rojo opened in 2010 focusing on the promotion of local, national and international contemporary artists. Its philosophy is to differentiate itself from the rest of galleries, give rigor to the proposals of its artists, and think in the interest of the public. Its creator and director, Carolina Rojo, who was interviewed for this newsletter, decided to start with this project to boost the Aragonese cultural scenario, after having been working thirteen years abroad.
The difficulties she has found and finds are many: "the economic crisis, the current cultural legislation, and the nearly non-existent program of contemporary and present art in the public exhibition hall and in museums of Zaragoza, hold the public from visiting them", explains her. In spite of the problems she has to face, she feels fortunate for working in something that really finds it fascinating. Everyday she fights for this sector to have more support. We have received aids from the Government of Aragon and the City of Zaragoza, but a biggest communication between the private and the public sector as well as the creation of an adequate policy of purchases is necessary. The next project of Carolina Rojo gallery will start in December.

Cantar alla violla
Music group Cantar alla Viola

Fernando Marín, founding member and soloist of Cantar alla Viola talks with us about this group of music recently created. At the beginning it was based on a rigorous interpretation of Renaissance art historically documented for accompanying singing with a bow vihuela, an old string instrument predecessor of the guitar. The project is born thanks to Fernando Marín, who plays the bow vihuela, and Nadine Balbeisi, voice. Its differentiated feature is the use of materials, instruments, interpretation techniques and, above all a rigorous and demanding researching work of historical sources. Passion and a constant work are fundamental requirements for a cultural project to have success. Thanks to the aids of the Government of Aragon and the grants of the Ministry of Culture, they have been able to fund their research and works but difficulties are always present. "Present tendencies, lacks in the present specific music education and a scarcity of funding for small projects of great ideas are problems that we find every day", asserts Fernando Marín. They are actually making several projects, one of them is recording another CD on Italian music from the Trecento.

Estudio Garno

Estudio Garno

Estudio Garno is a firm devoted to the restoration of furniture but also to educate and make students aware of the concept of recycling and of exploitation of objects that other people consider as useless. Regina Nogueras had this idea a year ago, after years working in restoration, when she decided to open her own workshop with the collaboration of her daughters. All the starts are difficult but this small company counts with the support of the Association of Professional Craftsmen of Aragon. "Bureaucracy and economy are the most usual problems we face", says Nogueras. Despite of that, they are very happy to be working in what they like and be developing their creativity and spreading it to others. Apart from restoration, they have other projects such as decoration and the full reform of premises and homes, all according to the concept of creative recycling, the reinvention of products and the reuse of materials.

Barometer 2012 on reading habits and the acquisition of books

The survey on the reading habits of Spanish people continue to point out to women as the profile of the Spanish reader of books. As far as the year 2010 is concerned, the number of readers older than 14 years old has increased in a 1.6%, reaching a 63% of the population. This way, it is reduced the distance separating us from the average figure in Europe that is a 70%. The Spanish people aged between 14 and 24 years continues to be the age group with the highest percentage of reading population. The main reason for justifying non- reading habits is the lack of time, mainly among population between 25 and 54 years old. There has been an increase of a 5.3% in the number of readers using a digital format with regard to the data of the year 2011.

The role of culture in development from 2015 on

The General Assembly of the UN of last 12 June emphasised the importance of acknowledging the fundamental role of culture for reducing poverty and for development. The participants stressed the necessity of guaranteeing that this aspect can form part of the post-2015 program. Ban Ki-moon, General Secretary of the UN, has pointed out that many development programs have failed because they do not have into account culture. Irina Bokova, General Director of UNESCO, has stated that "no society in the world can thrive without culture. No development is sustainable without it. Cultural diversity is also a source to find creative solutions to problems. Critic thought is improved to challenge old models".
